The prominent law firm of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP has laid off 16 people from its Providence office. Managing partner Walter Reed said no attorneys were involved. The employees who lost jobs, he said, were support personnel such as secretaries, messengers and a few paralegals.

Reed said the Providence office employs 246 people, including 79 lawyers. Reed said the firm had been reviewing costs for some time, and that the job reductions probably would have been made over time even if the economy was good. The economic turmoil of recent months, he said, mostly affected the timing of the layoffs.

Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge employs about 600 lawyers, plus another 600 support personnel, at 11 offices in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Reed said a total of 53 employees throughout the entire firm have been laid off..
