| Tax revenue drops in most states, not just R.I. »
Rhode Island's state budget problems can be resolved without raising taxes, Governor Carcieri says. Asked whether the current year's budget deficit can be fixed without tax hikes, he said, "I believe we can." At an interview during a break at an economic forum in Providence this morning, Carcieri acknowledged that state tax revenues are down for the first four months of the current fiscal year. But he said the state has taken a number of steps to trim expenses. He declined to estimate the size of the state's budget deficit, saying that a number will probably be available on Monday. |
