Gilbane Building Company, the Occupational Safety and Health agency, and the Rhode Island Building Trades are scheduled today to sign a partnership agreement for the T.F. Greene Airport expansion project.

Under the agreement, Gilbane will request specialty or trade contractors to join the partnership when they start working on the site.

The partnership will provide benefits, which include special recognition from OSHA and priority in compliance assistance programs.

The major goals of the partnership are to reduce by 5% annually the number of injuries, illnesses, and fatalities affecting participating employers, with an emphasis on reducing injuries and fatalities resulting from falls, struck-by, caught-in/between, electrocution and trenching. Also, the goal is to decrease worker compensation costs and the number of OSHA citations for the project.

In a statement, Tony O'Dea, Gilbane's director of corporate safety, said, "Through this partnership, we declare that we are united in our mutual goals and aligned in our commitment to ensure the safety and health of all workers on the project, and will cooperatively work to implement project wide best practices of safety preplanning, timely communication, effective training, hazard identification and correction, comprehensive inspection, and safety accountability."
