Fain's Carpet & Rug, a North Main Street fixture since the 1920s, will close at the end of the year, according to family members.

The closing comes as the result of technicalities in the store's lease, which will be taken over by another business.

The Fain family has a long history of retailing in the city, dating back to the 1880s in city's Silver Lake section. For decades though, Fain's has specialized in selling traditional hand-crafted rugs from India, Persia, Tibet and Pakistan, at a store at 126 North Main St.

Most recently, Linda Fain -- granddaughter of the business' founders -- has run the store along with her daughter, Julie Medina. Fain and her daughter said they have yet to decide whether they will quit the carpet business altogether or move it to another location in the city.
