The U.S. Department of the Interior is set to lease areas of the country's continental shelf off the northeast coast for wind turbines, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Wind farms could be built in areas off the coast near Delaware, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New York and New York City, the Journal said, adding that public comment on the proposals is being accepted from Sept. 8.
The sites would be far enough offshore to be in federal waters, and Department of Interior officials expect plans to be complete by year-end, with development starting soon after, the WSJ said.
