Woonsocket-based CVS Caremark Corp. this morning opened its first retail health center in Massachusetts, called MinuteClinic, inside a CVS/pharmacy in Medway

Four additional clinics are expected to open inside CVS/pharmacy stores in the near future in Bridgewater, Danvers, Taunton and Tewksbury.

"Through our conveniently located store-based clinics, we will be expanding access to high-quality, affordable care for common family illnesses in Massachusetts," said Chip Phillips, MinuteClinic president. "We are committed to making our innovative model of care part of Massachusetts' precedent-setting efforts to broaden access to quality health services."

MinuteClinic expects to open up to 28 locations in Massachusetts in 2008 and anticipates having about 100 clinics in communities across Massachusetts where CVS/pharmacy stores are located.

MinuteClinic health care centers are staffed by nurse practitioners who specialize in family health care and are trained to diagnose, treat and prescribe medication when it is part of a treatment plan for common family illnesses such as strep throat and ear, eye, sinus, and bronchial infections.
