Governor Carcieri this morning is scheduled to chair the meeting of the PK-16 (pre-kindergarten to fourth year of college) council on education, reviewing the advances in use of technology applications to improve education in Rhode Island.

In fiscal year 2007, Rhode Island committed nearly $15 million to the use of technology to improve teaching. The goal is to enrich the student learning experience, with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The investments support current and future teachers, those now working in the classroom and students who are education majors in college. A part of this funding is also dedicated to support investments in information systems in education.

The initiatives being presented to the council by the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, the Community College of Rhode Island and the Concord Consortium are designed to more directly support classroom instruction, help students develop the skills necessary for competing in the global economy, and better focus technology on the corebusiness of education.
