Governor Carcieri today formally launched a two-year plan to recover $10 million in delinquent taxes from more than 10,000 people and businesses.

The plan, dubbed "Compliance 2010 -- Revenue for Rhode Island's Future,'' is intended to bring more taxpayers into compliance with Rhode Island tax laws.

At the heart of the plan is special computer equipment -- called a data warehouse -- which state tax officials will use to store and analyze data from a number of sources, including the Internal Revenue Service and tax agencies in some other states.

"Compliance 2010 uses 21st century technology to identify delinquent and underreporting taxpayers and to bring new taxpayers onto the rolls during the next two fiscal years,'' Carcieri said in a statement.

Gary S. Sasse, director of the Rhode Island Department of Revenue, said, "The primary goal of the data warehouse is to create an environment where all information used by [the Division of Taxation] is centralized and standardized with updates from a variety of data sources, allowing thorough and comprehensive identification and collection."
