An autopsy is scheduled today for a 47-year-old man who died while in police custody.

Witnesses said they saw police elbow jab Mark Jackson, of Warwick, in the ribs and smash him in the face with their knees.

Police say they responded to a call about vandalism of a business sign in West Warwick. When they arrived, according to Attorney General spokesman Mike Healey, the officers called twice for back up.

Jackson, who suffered from schizophrenia, did not respond to orders to take his hands out of his pockets, Healey said, and police attempted to take him into custody.

One witness reported the struggle lasting about 10 minutes. When it was over, three officers carried him into a cruiser.

If the state Medical Examiner does not conclude that Jackson died from natural causes, Healey said, the state may convene a grand jury.

After living in that gross town for a few a years as a single mother, I am glad to be out.
I am not surprised and I hope those cops get what they desrve , shame on them...
They once responded to a call and got the address mixed up .They insisted they were right and it turned out they were wrong.
WW police are TERRIBLE. I hope justice is done for that innocent man and his family.

Honestly, when are the police officers for our state going to wake up and stop using no-brain strong arm tactics that kill people? In the past year we have lost so many people due to idiot police with chips on their shoulders. East Providence, Woonsocket, Pawtucket. I think the police definition of what is allowable to kill someone over is waaaaaaayyy tooo broad!! How many more people are going to die before someone stands up and says, "this is working, we need to try something different"

You want to talk budget crises.. look at how the police departments are run. If you are detained by police and you owe $50 for a payment plan for a ticket, you are arrested, car impounded, taken to a local jail, transported to ACI and processed there. FOR $50!!!! At any point along the way if the officer in any way thinks you are not being respectful enough to him.. be careful because that beating is on it's way.

Our nation has aged well, but this state - not so much.

To the family: I'm so, so sorry for your loss. To the city and town officials in this state: It is time to provide special training for all law enforcement personnel, so they may learn how to deal with someone who is mentally ill
