![]() Uruguayan flag pins - made in Rhode Island MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay -- Sure, the U.S. embassy in Montevideo has to buy American. But it chose to buy from Rhode Island, at least for one product: the American and Uruguayan flag pins given out to visitors. The pins are produced by Hook-Fast Specialties Inc., a Providence firm founded in 1926 to market a new type of belt buckle. The company now sells badges, tie clasps, money clips, key chains and other items, including, apparently, Uruguayan flag pins. The pin is a highlight in the embassy, an unsightly concrete box designed by the architect I.M. Pei in the 1970s opposite La Rambla, the city's coastal promenade. It's not a popular building, and not just because it interrupts the water views. But not everyone will admit that; one cab driver recently said he couldn't comment on the design. "Shh," he warned, "they're listening." Posted by Benjamin N. Gedan |
