Five communities and organizations in Rhode Island have been awarded $1.8 million in Environmental Protection Agency funding from the Brownfield’s program to help revitalize former industrial and commercial sites.
The EPA grants will help pay to assess, clean and redevelop the abandoned, contaminated parcels. Projects are selected on a competitive basis. Of the $74 million of Brownfields grants nationwide announced today by EPA, nearly $10 million are in New England states. Brownfields are sites where expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Here are the list of grants:
Providence Community Health Centers, $400,000 (two grants)
Town of Middletown, $200,000
City of Woonsocket, $600,000 (three grants)
Town of Richmond, $200,000
R.I. Dept. of Environmental Management, $400,000 (two grants)
