A New York-based fitness center chain plans to open “several” sites in Rhode Island in the next couple of years, including at least two in Providence. Town Sports International Holdings Inc. (CLUB:Nasdaq) operates 151 fitness centers in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic under a variety of names, including New York Sports Clubs, Boston Sports Clubs, Philadelphia Sports Clubs and Washington Sports Clubs. It will run its Rhode Island centers, including ones at 10 Dorrance St. and on the East Side in Providence, under the Boston Sports Clubs banner, according to a company spokeswoman. The company uses a hub-and-spoke development model, building or acquiring a fitness center in an urban core and then branching out to surrounding communities. Town Sports currently runs 22 centers under the Boston Sports Clubs banner, according to company spokeswoman Lisa Hufcut. She did not provide an estimated opening date for the two Providence sites. |
