EDC calls for 'life sciences incubator'
The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation is crafting a proposal for a "life sciences incubator" where technology start-ups could conduct research.
In an interview this morning, the EDC director, Saul Kaplan, said the facility would be modeled after the office space provided by The Slater Technology Fund, a taxpayer-backed source of venture capital.
"We want to make it bigger and get it over to the jewelery district, which is going to be the center of gravity," Kaplan said.
The plan, which has not been publicly announced, would probably work like this: a private company would build or renovate a facility, which the EDC would lease and then rent out sections to promising firms, Kaplan said.
