The drug Alexion Pharmaceuticals plans to produce in Smithfield reduced the destruction of red blood cells and improved fatigue, quality of life and anemia in patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), according to an analysis of the Phase III SHEPHERD study that has been published online in Blood, the journal of the American Society of Hematology. Alexion (ALXN:Nasdaq), based in Cheshire, Conn., announced the publication of the study's findings in a statement. Alexion has hired more than 100 employees for its new plant, located at the former Dow Chemical production facility.
